The Eden concept was founded in 1991 by Dr William Thomas, an American geriatrician. Dr Thomas was a pioneer in the field of geriatric medicine and recognised that many older people in care facilities suffered from loneliness, boredom and helplessness, which he referred to as the 'three plagues' of elderly care. It has become established in several countries, including the USA, Canada, Europe (including Germany and Austria), Australia and New Zealand.

The EDEN alternative concept is generally used primarily in residential care facilities to improve the lives of residents by creating a communal and liveable environment. However, elements of the EDEN approach can also be used in the extramural sector, i.e. in home care and for clients who have 24-hour care at home.

Combating the "plagues"Avoiding loneliness, helplessness and boredom can also be realised in the home environment. Carers can involve the client in social activities, hobbies or regular tasks to promote a sense of purpose and participation.
